Properties on Main
Street almost always have a history. People who buy them love that about
them, and this charming 1900 square foot Greek Revival built in 1860, is
no exception. Never much changed in outward appearance, with its front
facing gable pediment, the house retains much of that same nineteenth
century ambience inside.
The foyer is defined by the original staircase, not changed in 150 years!
A columned double ‘doorway’ to the left leads to a delightful livingroom
with bookcases on the far wall. Just beyond the livingroom, through double
French doors, is a truly spacious, formal diningroom, with its own
‘pantry’ for all those things entertaining requires. The bright, open,
eat-in kitchen with lots of cabinets and good serviceable counter space is
large and welcoming and looks out over a deep and level backyard that has
been doubly fenced: one for the children, the second for the pets! This
level also offers a pretty powder room and a glass enclosed mudroom (or
small porch), with sliders to the patio.
Up are three bedrooms and full bath, in addition to a large“ landing” that
work as a small sitting/reading/working area with its two walls of
built-ins. On the third floor is a “whatever you wish” room. At the
moment, used as an office, it has, in the past, been a fourth bedroom.
What’s really wonderful, however, is that the current owners, while
keeping and even adding to the original flavor of the home, (new crown
moldings, period colors) have very clearly brought it up to the structural
and mechanical standards of today.
In 2006, they replaced the roof, the gutters, and the flashing around the
chimney, as well as restoring the concrete foundation, and installing an
invisible fence. In that same year, the baths were gutted and redone, the
entire interior repainted, the floors refinished, the kitchen cabinets
resurfaced , and high-velocity air condition installed.
In 2007, the exterior of the house was painted and composite shutters and
hardware were added, a new oil burner and hot water heater replaced the
old, and in 2009 new railings were added to the front steps. In short,
there is nothing at all to be done. Here is a home where the term
‘move-in’ is not an overstatement!
Simply special, this in-town colonial is just an easy walk to school in
the morning, to a small park bench for a quiet talk, to the library for
the latest read, to a lively spot for dinner, or to town for a twilight
stroll.
Love a “Main Street” kind of life? This exceptional property could be the
perfect choice! Within walking distance to the library, the post office, banks, the town
hall, great restaurants and coffee shops, as well as quiet parks and a
lovely old ‘parade ground’, and located just across the street from
Choate-Rosemary Hall, this very special, wonderfully well-maintained and
cared for property, offers the best of gracious living in an urban
setting.
